Maison Louis Marie has a flagship in the neighborhood where it started. The independent fragrance and body care brand runs its Los Angeles store at 3920 Sunset Blvd. in Silver Lake, and Los Angeles Magazine included it in its September roundup of new beauty and retail boutiques for fall.
From a Silver Lake studio to Sunset Boulevard
Maison Louis Marie began as a candle brand in a small Silver Lake studio about 13 years ago, Fashionista reported. It is named for founder Marie du Petit Thouars’s great-grandfather, Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars, an 18th-century French botanist.
Los Angeles Magazine lists Marie du Petit Thouars and Matthew Berkson as the brand’s founders. The company remains fully independent, with no outside investors, according to Fashionista.
Today the line covers candles, perfume oils, eaux de parfum and body products. It is also sold at Sephora, Bluemercury and Goop.
A store designed to feel like an apartment
The space was designed by Via Clover, the studio behind interiors for Alaïa, Dries Van Noten and Chloé. It blends French and Californian references, with plastered arches, travertine, oak, tile, steel and concrete, plus custom furniture.
The idea, Fashionista reported, was a room that feels lived in rather than a typical shop floor. “I want customers to be on a little journey where it’s calm, comfortable and peaceful and they can discover the whole collection,” du Petit Thouars told the outlet.
What to try first at Maison Louis Marie
Los Angeles Magazine pointed shoppers to No. 15 Vanille Infinie, a vanilla scent offered as an eau de parfum, a perfume oil or a candle. Having one scent in several formats makes it easy to sample before committing to a full bottle.
