Contrapposto fragrance is here. The Los Angeles beauty house, best known for its aesthetics clinic, has released its first fine fragrances: three extraits de parfum priced at $350 for 50 milliliters each.
Nick Axelrod-Welk co-founded Contrapposto with his husband, Casey Axelrod-Welk. Before opening the clinic in California about three years ago, Nick worked on brands including Glossier, Nécessaire and Homecourt, according to Marie Claire.
Three scents, two perfumers
The debut collection was developed with perfumers Frank Voelkl of Firmenich and Shyamala Maisondieu of Givaudan. Each scent leans on skin-like warmth rather than a loud opening.
- Lubanite: a mineral and ambergris blend with citrusy resin and pink peppercorn.
- Melting Flowers: a white floral built on gardenia, jasmine and soft musks.
- Musc Pétille: sandalwood and ambrette with peach nectar.
Melting Flowers also made Bustle’s list of the best beauty launches of September.
A clinic’s idea of perfume
The thinking behind the Contrapposto fragrance line follows the clinic’s approach to treatments. The goal is to enhance what is already there.
Nick told Marie Claire he wanted a scent “that felt like you were truly wearing it versus it wearing you.” He also named craftsmanship, story and quality as the markers of luxury he cared about.
That framing gives the launch a clear point of view. It treats perfume as a finishing step, closer to skin care than to a statement accessory.
Packaging that reads like a book
The bottles arrive inside a 416-page book designed by Brian Rottinger. Its pages draw on artwork from the archives of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress, with laser-cut compartments that hold the bottles.
It is an unusual choice for a fragrance box, and a fitting one for a brand named after a classical sculpture pose.
Why it matters for L.A. beauty
Los Angeles has a long list of skin care brands born from clinics and facialists. Fewer of them make the jump into fine fragrance, a category that usually belongs to heritage perfume houses.
Contrapposto is making that move with established perfumers and a small, focused lineup. Find more L.A. beauty news in Style & Beauty.
