Shudder has acquired Split Rock, the second feature from writer-director Ryan Glover, and will release it on the streaming service on December 25, 2026, the company announced on October 8.

The deal covers the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The film had its world premiere at the 59th Sitges Film Festival on October 9 and its North American premiere at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival on October 21.

The film

Shot on 16mm, Split Rock follows geologists Lauren (Clark Backo) and Ben (Drew Ray Tanner) as they investigate an anomaly deep in the remote badlands. After the couple and their team unearth an ancient force hidden in the hills, they face a series of escalating horrors.

Backo’s credits include AMC+’s Yaga, Apple TV+’s The Changeling and Venom: The Last Dance. Tanner is known for Netflix’s Riverdale. Olivia Luccardi (It Follows, The Deuce) and Graham Verchere (The Fall of the House of Usher, Summer of ’84) round out the cast.

Glover’s first feature, The Strings, was released by Shudder in 2021. In the announcement, he called Split Rock “my bloodier, and far more ambitious second film” and said he was glad to be working with Shudder again.

Emily Gotto, Shudder’s SVP of acquisitions and productions, said Glover “has delivered a meticulously crafted world of psychological tension and haunting performances from its intimate cast.”

Behind the camera

Brian Robertson of Low End (Cursed Films, V/H/S/Beyond), Jefferson Moneo of Prowler Pictures and Krista Dzialoszynski of Observer Effect (The Strings) produced. Executive producers are Glover, Kate Melville, Fabiola Caraza, Patrick Hackett and Daniel Futa. Gotto negotiated the deal for Shudder with Robertson on behalf of the filmmakers.
