The historic Muckenthaler Mansion in Fullerton, home of the Muckenthaler Cultural Center

The Muckenthaler Cultural Center, known locally as The Muck, is an arts nonprofit at 1201 W. Malvern Ave. in Fullerton. It is based in the historic Muckenthaler Mansion, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its legal name is the Muckenthaler Cultural Center Foundation.

The organization marked a centennial season in 2025. Coverage of that season said it honored founders Harold and Shirley Muckenthaler and included gallery exhibits, classes, concerts and theatre from the center’s resident company, Electric Company Theatre.

Mission and programs

A nonprofit directory listing for the foundation gives its mission as providing experiences that “stimulate creativity and imagination” and conserving the heritage and architecture of the Muckenthaler Estate.

A California Arts Council grantee profile says the center produces more than 60 performances, gallery exhibits, festivals and special events a year, along with more than 3,500 hours of arts education classes at the center and at 25 outreach sites. The profile puts its yearly reach at more than 41,000 people. Figures on the center’s own pages have differed, so treat the numbers as approximate.

Outreach

In 2023-24 the California Arts Council awarded the foundation $21,250 for visual arts classes with GEO Reentry Services. Students in that program, who are formerly incarcerated, learn charcoal, pastel and ceramics, and the classes end with exhibits that family members and staff can attend.

Ways to support

The center lists classes, exhibits and events on its website, along with information on giving. Its listings for volunteers and donors are best confirmed with the center directly, since programs change through the year.
