Whisky a Go Go
The Whisky a Go Go sits at Sunset Boulevard and Clark Street on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Elmer Valentine and partners opened it on January 16, 1964. An early booking decision put a DJ in a raised glass booth between sets, and the dancers who performed there helped popularize go-go dancing.
The Doors served as the house band in 1966, and the club later hosted punk bands and Seattle grunge acts such as Soundgarden and Mudhoney. It was recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
The room holds about 500 and books hard rock, metal, punk and alternative bands most nights, often with several acts on a bill. It is open daily from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., with a weekday afternoon happy hour. Call or email the venue for age limits on specific shows.
