Walt Disney Concert Hall
Walt Disney Concert Hall stands at 111 South Grand Avenue on Bunker Hill in Downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Frank Gehry, it opened on October 23, 2003, and seats 2,265. It is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
Gehry’s team used CATIA, software originally built for aircraft design, to work out the curved stainless steel exterior. Some panels reflected so much sunlight onto neighboring buildings that they were sanded down in 2005. Inside, a concert organ completed in 2004 has 6,125 pipes, and the room was tuned for a reverberation time of about two seconds.
The LA Phil season fills most dates, with jazz, world music and contemporary artists booked alongside it. Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill station on the A and E lines is steps away, and an underground garage sits beneath the hall. Photography and recording are not allowed during performances without written permission.
