San Gabriel Mission Playhouse
The San Gabriel Mission Playhouse is a 1,387-seat theater on Mission Drive, across from the historic San Gabriel Mission. Architect Arthur Burnett Benton designed it in the Mission Revival style, and it opened in 1927 as the home of John Steven McGroarty’s long-running Mission Play.
The City of San Gabriel bought the building in 1945, used it for years as a civic auditorium, and restored the Mission Playhouse name in 2007. It retains a restored 1924 Wurlitzer pipe organ and Spanish tapestries given by King Alfonso XIII.
The city-run venue hosts concerts, musical theatre and community events. Its calendar includes Cantopop and other Asian-language music shows, and the theater is working toward restoration projects ahead of its centennial.
