Royce Hall

Venue Profile

Los Angeles, CA · 1800 capacity · Indoor · Updated September 2026

Royce Hall is the 1,800-seat auditorium at the center of the UCLA campus in Westwood. Completed in 1929 as one of the university’s four original buildings, it was designed by Allison & Allison in a Lombard Romanesque style, with twin towers modeled on the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan.

The hall has presented George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Ella Fitzgerald, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic made many recordings there under Zubin Mehta between 1967 and 1978. Frank Zappa, Neil Young and Tori Amos are among the artists who recorded live material in the room. After damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, a seismic renovation completed in 1998 updated the auditorium. It houses a 6,600-pipe E.M. Skinner organ.

Today UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance presents music, dance and theatre here alongside rentals. Light concessions are sold before shows and at intermission for select events. Late seating is not guaranteed, and recording of any kind is prohibited.
