McCabe’s Guitar Shop
McCabe’s is a guitar store on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica that turns its back room into a 150-seat concert space on show nights. Furniture designer Gerald McCabe opened the shop in 1958, and it still sells and repairs instruments and runs a music school during the day.
Concerts began in 1969 with a benefit organized by Mike Seeger for folk musician Elizabeth Cotten. Since then the room has hosted performers such as Townes Van Zandt, Norman Blake, Maria Muldaur and R.E.M., and a number of artists have released live albums recorded there. Current bookings focus on folk, bluegrass, Americana, singer-songwriters and world music.
Tickets are sold online and all sales are final. Photography and recording are not allowed during shows. Parking is on the street: Pico’s meters are free after 6 p.m., and a bank lot behind the building opens to concertgoers in the evening.
