Hollywood Bowl
The Hollywood Bowl sits in a natural canyon off Highland Avenue in the Hollywood Hills, a short drive north of Hollywood Boulevard. The site, originally known as Daisy Dell, was chosen in 1919 for its acoustics, and the amphitheater held its first official season in 1922. Los Angeles County owns the Bowl, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic runs it as its summer home.
The concentric arches of the band shell have been rebuilt several times. The current shell, which debuted in 2004, borrows from earlier designs while adding modern sound reinforcement. The Beatles played here in 1964 and 1965, and a 1956 Jazz at the Philharmonic show featured Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
The season mixes classical programs with jazz, film nights and rented pop and rock dates, with roughly 17,500 seats spread over boxes, terraces and benches. Guests may bring food, and outside wine and beer are allowed at LA Phil presentations but not at lease events marked with special house rules. Parking is stacked, so many visitors use the shuttle and Park & Ride buses.
