About Kansas
Kansas formed in Topeka, Kansas, in the early 1970s and released its self‑titled debut album in 1974. The band set hard rock guitar against violin and layered keyboards, an approach that separated it from most American arena acts of the era.
Its commercial peak came with Leftoverture (1976) and Point of Know Return (1977), which produced “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.” Both songs remain radio staples and have reached new listeners through film, television, and streaming. Guitarist Richard Williams has anchored the lineup since the beginning, and the band continues to record and tour.
