Jayden Adams, the South African midfielder who played in all three of his country’s group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, died on 11 July 2026 at the age of 25. His death was confirmed by his representatives, his club Mamelodi Sundowns, and the South African Football Players Union. He was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, according to the BBC, which reported that police had opened an investigation. The cause of death has not been confirmed.
South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, Gayton McKenzie, appealed for restraint. “The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed,” he said in a statement, “and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation.” Brendine Johnson, Adams’ mentor, spoke on behalf of the family and asked for privacy. “We ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this painful time,” he told the Daily Sun.
A career built from the ground up
Adams was born on 5 May 2001 in Cape Town, South Africa. He came through the academy at Stellenbosch FC and became the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract, in August 2020. He made his senior debut that same month as a substitute in a 1-1 draw against Chippa United.
In January 2025, he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the continent’s biggest clubs, where he won league and African Champions League titles.
World Cup and what it meant
Adams made his senior international debut in 2022. He was part of the South Africa squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. At the 2026 World Cup, he started the opening group defeat to Mexico and the draw with the Czech Republic, and came on as a substitute in the win over South Korea. He did not feature in the round-of-32 loss to Canada. South Africa reached the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
The BBC notes that Adams started against the Czech Republic despite learning only hours before kick-off that his grandmother had died. He finished his international career with two goals in 13 appearances, according to CNN. Both goals came in 2026 World Cup qualifying.
He is survived by his young daughter, Allaia-Jayda. He had also mourned the death of his close friend and former Stellenbosch teammate Oshwin Andries, who was killed in 2023. After winning the CAF Champions League in May, Adams dedicated his winners’ medal to Andries.
What Jayden Adams meant to South African football
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said he was “so incredibly sad” to hear the news. The South African Football Players Union called it “an immeasurable loss.” McKenzie said simply that the country had lost “one of its brightest young talents.”
